Charles married Wanda Lucille Coover on Sept 23, 1946 and they had two children.

Generations of Pioneering and Railroading Family Gather for Reunion

The BUCKLAND-DAVIDSON-TABOR FAMILY REUNION was held Saturday, May 8th at Graham Recreation Park on 460 west of Bluefield, VA. From ten states, nearly 100 relatives of L.W.,Sr. And Mary Jane Davidson Buckland shared a beautiful spring day in celebration of their pioneer heritage and told stories from their childhood. The ancestoral couple resided in Falls Mills from the early 1920's until 1967 when Mr. Buckland passed away. His only living child, Robert Cecil Buckland (92), owns and lives in the old foursquare brick homeplace on Mudfork Road. Larkin Watson's father, Jacob Alexander Buckland, husband of Sarah Jane Tabor, owned land and operated a grist mill on the Bluestone River and was a horse breeder throughout the county.

The group's ancestry is English from the Buckland line, Scotch-Irish from the Davidson, Daugherty and Ward lines and German through the Harman line. Pioneers from these families immigrated and settled these lands through violent Indian attacks. These descendants are directly related to John Goolman Davidson, original settler of Bluefield who fought Indians alongside the Bailey's at a fort near the current day Westgate Shopping Center and Bluefield College at the state line. Ties also connect Davidson's son Joseph, whose log home is on view near Mitchell Stadium. Pioneer David Ward of Tazewell's Ward's Cove and Col. Henry Harman, key officers in the establishment of Tazewell County are also connected. If first cousins, five or six times removed count, this long standing family is related to both General Samuel Houston and Virginia's Civil War Governor, John Letcher. There is talk of this being the "first annual" Buckland-Davidson Family Reunion, but there is no future date set as of yet.

My 2nd great grandparents were married. Mary Jane Daugherty (John L.,John, John) and Daniel Parham Gregory (John Keatts, William, John, Thomas III, Thomas II, Thomas, Richard). They had six children and were laid to rest at the Daniel Gregory Cemetery in Clear Fork, Tazewell County, VA. Mary Jane was the granddaughter of Tazewell County pioneer, David Ward. Her brief obit is preserved in an old scrapbook belonging to her namesake granddaughter, Mary Jane Davidson.

Wikipedia says, "Scrofula is the term used for tuberculosis of the neck, or, more precisely, a cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy. Scrofula is usually a result of an infection in the lymph nodes, known as lymphadenitis and is most often observed in immunocompromised patients (about 50% of cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy). About 95% of the scrofula cases in adults are caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but only 8% of cases in children. The rest are caused by atypical mycobacterium (Mycobacterium scrofulaceum) or nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). With the stark decrease of tuberculosis in the second half of the 20th century, scrofula became a very rare disease. With the appearance of AIDS, however, it has shown a resurgence, and presently affects about 5% of severely immunocompromised patients. Signs and symptoms...The most usual signs and symptoms are the appearance of a chronic, painless mass in the neck, which is persistent and usually grows with time. The mass is referred to as a "cold abscess", because there is no accompanying local color or warmth and the overlying skin acquires a violaceous (bluish-purple) color. NTM infections do not show other notable constitutional symptoms, but scrofula caused by tuberculosis is usually accompanied by other symptoms of the disease, such as fever, chills, malaise and weight loss in about 43% of the patients. As the lesion progresses, skin becomes adhered to the mass and may rupture, forming a sinus and an open wound."

Mary is Mary Clay Gregory, the younger sister of Daniel Parham Gregory. I would say this is how Daniel and Mary Jane Daugherty met. (speculation Browne Hollowell) And I would bet that living in Chas. H. Greever's house as probably a servant or helper to Eliza Greever, that Mary Jane named her next daughter after a woman who had been kind and a friend to her. Were they related? I don't know.

Charles and Eliza are buried at the Greever Cemetery at Five Oaks in east Tazewell. Eliza J., wife of Chas H. Greever, died Nov. 9, 1881, age 62 y & 7 D. I think that would make her born Nov. 2, 1819. So actually she was 31 (Lacking one month) in 1850. So a 31 year old married woman with three children, could have welcomed young 20yr old Mary Daugherty, and been a friend and mentor. As you know, it was very common in 18th and 19th centuries, for a young girl to leave her family and go live with another family, not necessarily as a servant but more as a mother's helper. Perhaps it was a way of dealing with adolescent attitudes which can be a little difficult between mother and daughter sometimes, but would have been tempered by being in another woman's house.

On 22 May 1852, twins were born. This was not unusual in the Gregory family to have twins.
These twins were named John K. L. and Elizabeth H. John K. L. died the next day, 23 May 1852, but he was named for Daniel's father, John Keatts Gregory. I do not know what the L stands for. Elizabeth H. is most probably named after Daniel's mother, Elizabeth Holland Corder Gregory. This was a strong custom to name the first after the father's family.

Next, in March, 1854, Nancy Ward Gregory is born. She is named after Mary Jane's mother, Nancy Ward Daugherty. Again, a strong custom to name after the mother's family at the next birth. Then Eliza Greever Gregory is born June 1856.

Calling cards or visiting cards were first used in China in the 15th century. They became popular in Europe during the 17th century, and soon traveled across the Atlantic to the social elite in the Americas.

Calling cards became an essential accessory for the rounds of reciprocal visits that played a significant role in genteel social life. They were used in accordance with an elaborate set of rules, according to which a would-be visitor would first leave her card with a new acquaintance at the acquaintance's home. The visitor would not expect to be admitted into the house, but would hope to receive a card from the acquaintance in response, as a sign that a face-to-face meeting would be welcomed. If the visitor did not receive a card in response, or if she received a card sent in an envelope (as opposed to one delivered personally by the acquaintance or her servant), she would know that she had received a social snub, and be discouraged from pursuing a face-to-face meeting.

During the 19th century the middle classes, in imitation of more privileged society, adopted the practice of using calling cards. The purpose of the cards changed, however, when fewer servants were available to deliver them, and they evolved as a precursor to the modern-day business card. Calling cards during this period were generally smaller than today's business cards, and usually consisted simply of a name engraved on glossy cardstock.

Emily Post, writing early in the 20th century, suggests that in certain social groups, calling cards could replace informal party invitations, contain messages of condolence or celebration, be used as endorsements, or be sent by mail. Even for Post, however, there are times when custom dictates that a calling card must be left. First, a guest must always leave a card after dining at someone's house for the first time, or if they were invited to a dinner but were unable to attend. Another occasion that requires a calling card, according to Post, is the return of a first visit. Post also considers a calling card essential when sending an invitation for the first time, and says that a card should always accompany the inquiries and expressions of sympathy that occur in the case of bereavement or illness in a family.

The following summary reflection from Emily Post conveys the social utility of calling cards, which lasted well into the 20th century: "Who was it that said—in the Victorian era probably, and a man of course—'The only mechanical tool ever needed by a woman is a hair-pin?' A William Harrison was married to my 3rd cousin, 4x removed, Anna Eliza Harman. This was 3rd cousin, 2x removed, from Grandmother Buckland.

Some folks from Falls Mills, VA will remember Mrs. Mammie Lee Harry who lived beside and probably owned the land where the current day Harry Cemetery lies on Mudfork Road near Falls Mills Christian Church.

The above calling cards were from a scrapbook belonging to my grandmother, Mary Jane (Davidson) Buckland. Sadly enough, hospitality and good manners seem to be a lost art in our generation.

Charles died on March 30, 1946 in Salem, Marion County, OR. He married Frances Sowers Reid on November 6, 1895. Three children were Walker Reid, Margaret Mary, Byron Jordan. Charles lived his boyhood on the farm and then became interested in the river boats that plied their way up and down the Williamette River. Soon he was a river-boat engineer and spent many years as one of the most able and colorful men on the river. When his son Byron grew older, he too learned the ways of the Williamette River. On the first anniversary of our freedom

this article from the Virginia Gazette - Philadelphia

"Yesterday the 4th of July, being the Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstration of joy and festivity. About noon all the armed ships and gallies in the river were drawn up before the city, dressed in the gayest manner, with the colours of the United States and streamers displayed. At one o'clock, the yards being properly manned, they began the celebration of the day by a discharge of thirteen cannon from each of the ships, and one from each of the thirteen gallies, in honour of the Thirteen United States. In the afternoon an elegant dinner was prepared for Congress, to which were invited the President and Supreme Executive Council, and Speaker of the Assembly of this State, the General Officers and Colonels of the army, and strangers of eminence, and the members of the several Continental Boards in town. The Hessian band of music taken in Trenton the 26th of December last, attended and heightened the festivity with some fine performances suited to the joyous occasion, while a corps of British deserters, taken into the service of the continent by the State of Georgia, being drawn up before the door, filled up the intervals with feux de joie. After dinner a number of toasts were drank, all breaking independence, and a generous love of liberty, and commemorating the memories of those brave and worthy patriots who gallantly exposed their lives, and fell gloriously in defence [sic] of freedom and the righteous cause of their country. Each toasts was followed by a discharge of artillery and small arms, and a suitable piece of music by the Hessian band. The glorious fourth of July was reiterated three times accompanied with triple discharges of cannon and small arms, and loud huzzas that resounded from street to street through the city. Towards evening several troops of horse, a corps of artillery, and a brigade of North Carolina forces, which was in town on its way to join the grand army, were drawn up in Second street and reviewed by Congress and the General Officers. The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded with thirteen rockets on the commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated. Every thing was conducted with the greatest order and decorum, and the face of joy and gladness was universal. Thus may the 4th of July, that glorious and ever memorable day, be celebrated through America, by the sons of freedom, from age to age till time shall be no more. Amen, and amen."

My 2nd cousin, 2x removed, Claude Gregory, was one of three known children born to Lewis (Louis) F. and Alice Jane (Keesee) Gregory. He died at the age of 3 from measels and is buried at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield, Mercer County, WV. I visited that cemetery in May 2009, but did not find his gravesite. There is a possibility that he is buried in the Kessee plot which includes some unmarked graves.

David and his wife Nannie are buried in Marrs Graveyard in Falls Mills, Virginia. Unfortunately, the small cemetery is now owned by someone who stables horses on the property without fencing the cemetery plots. Head stones are tragically being turned over and destroyed by the animals. In the fall of 08, I politely wrote the person that I think owns the property asking for some consideration in fencing the plots. As of this date, I have had no response.

David served in the Civil War as private, Company D, 23rd Battalion of Infantry, Confederate States of America. David B. Baldwin was the Captain of the Battalion known as "Derrick's Battalion." They saw service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. David Daugherty was wounded, but recovered. He settled at Tazewell Co., Virginia and helped his community in many capacities.

Rev. David Allen Daugherty was a Methodist minister and a teacher. Between 1865-1869 he was Commissioner of the Revenue, District 1. 1869 Assistant Commissioner, District 1 and 2. 1891 Deputy Sheriff. He was related to Virginia's Governor John Letcher.

from shared FTM data online we find that John Dougherty moved from Tazewell County, Virginia in about 1820 to McMinn County, Tennessee near present day Riceville, in either the Old Salem or Double Springs community.

The William C. Dougherty Book of 1930 indicated he came to America with the other three siblings. Several clues follow family traditions and folklore. One story relates John migrated into Pennsylvania while other evidence indicates he either settled in Virginia as did his siblings and later migrated West or died without issue. John Dougherty married a Hannah Letcher, daughter to John Letcher and Mary Houston. John Letcher was from Fluvanna County, Virginia and Mary Houston was from Rockbridge County, Virginia. Mary's father, Robert Houston was born in Ireland ca. 1720 and came to America prior to Mary's birth. Other than what was recorded of Hannah, it is known they lived in the late 1800's in Tazwell Co.,Virginia and Hannah died in Tennessee. (Ref. WFT Vol. 12, #1881)

I, John Dougherty do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament. First I direct that my funeral expenses and all my debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of any monys that I may disposed or may be first come into the hands of my Executor. Secondly I give and bequeath into my daughter Mary B Daugherty one half of the Spring lot, the East end including the spring also running with the lane west with Allen Haleys line to the corner, thence continuing a straight line to John Jenkins line so as to include fifty acres together with the buildings and orchard on said fifty acres of land also all my personal property that may remain after my death. Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Bradford the remainder of my lands which will be about eighty acers by paying to my daughter Clarinda Mitchell one hundred dollars, and to my daughter Juliann Parkinson the sum of ten dollars. Lastly I do nominate and appoint David Bradford my Executor. In witness thereof I do this my Will set my hand and Seal this 13th day of June 1849.

WARNING - Watch for Snakes

If you are at all bothered by snakes, you might want to skip this post. I mean, this is supposed to be a family tree blog to which I post ancestoral information and pictures based chronologically on birth or anniversary dates. However, some days I don't have any relatives to post or boast about, so I feel free to stray.

Almost daily, I stroll our secluded suburban neighborhood and see beautiful things. We are surrounded by a natural setting that offers, eagles, hawks, redfox and even a coyote or two on occasion. If only I were a wonderful photographer who could capture the moment to share with you.

Lately ... I have seen SNAKES, SNAKES, SNAKES - Yuk!

This morning a small, probably harmless SNAKE met me at the faucet as I turned on my garden sprinkler. A little later, I halted in my tracks when I spotted a huge shiny dark slithering SNAKE crossing the street in the direction of the pond. Just last week, I found a wonderfully colorful SNAKE, a couple of houses down; the obvious victim of direct contact with a car tire. Yes! Yes!

The red, yellow and black stripe SNAKE is actually my favorite. I mean, if I could have a favorite SNAKE. Not just because it is dead, but because it is beautiful and has a great story attached. It's a Florida Scarlet SNAKE.

The snakes in question are the venomous Coral Snake, and my favorite copycat, the Florida Scarlet Snake. Oftentimes in nature, a species will mimic the appearance of a dangerous species, for protection. Animals know to stay away from the venomous Coral Snake, so a similar color pattern has helped other snake species survive.

There's one little glitch, however. Though the mimic snake has a similar size and shape, and the same Red-Black-Yellow color scheme, the order of the pattern is different. For some reason, the mimic, has black bands every other color. The coral snake is the only one that has alternating yellow bands. Thus, with the Coral snake, the red band touches the yellow band, and with the mimics, the red band touches the black band.

Here is what I love - In order to help folk remember how to distinguish a venomous from a harmless SNAKE, a man named "Fat" Jack Loticus developed a rhyme in 1862.

Red and yellow, kill a fellow
Red and black, friend of Jack.

Cool, Huh? I always say that rhyme to myself, just to be sure.

Anyway, imagine our Virginia pioneer ancestors forging their way through the mountain side forests and rockbed rivers, and the encounters they must have had with SNAKES. Some SNAKES common to southwest Virginia are shown below. Would you recognize them if you happened upon one?

When her father died, author Katie Letcher Lyle uncovered in his garage three cartons of papers documenting four generations of her family. The boxes included an astonishing array of materials, including "letters, postcards, papers, documents, check registers, Confederate bills, files, receipts, old photographs, notebooks, envelopes of stamps, deeds, bills, depositions, certificates, proclamations, diplomas, and market lists." Among them were the letters of her grandparents-Greenlee D. Letcher, the youngest child of John Letcher, Virginia's Civil War governor, and his wife, Katherine (Katie) Seymour Paul. In My Dearest Angel, Lyle deftly tells the story of their life together.

Greenlee and Katie Letcher could not have been more different. He served as a state legislator, worked as a lawyer in Lexington, and traveled widely, all the while scribbling and sending letters. She was the daughter of a Republican circuit judge and state senator from Harrisonburg and shied away from public life, preferring instead the familiarity of home and family. Their marriage was tinged with melancholy: Two of their three children died, and Katie, who found fulfillment largely in her role as a mother, struggled throughout her life with ill health and depression. Greenlee's letters addressed her as "Sweet Angel, My Own, My Love, My Life," but she often chafed at the role of adored wife, spending long periods of time with her parents, on rest cures, or in hospitals, away from her husband and his family. Their letters provide an unusually intimate portrait of a marriage, beginning in 1898, when they wed at her parents' home, and ending in 1947, when Katie died from a stroke.

Below is a scrapbook newpaper clipping regarding her death. I do not have an obituary.

Mary Jane was the granddaughter of David and Eleanor (Clancy) Ward, well-known pioneers who helped establish Tazewell County. Per Lee Pyle, a Ward descendant:

David Ward, the progenitor of the Ward family in Tazewell County, was the son of William Ward who came from Ireland about 1730. In the year 1769, David Ward located in Tazewell County, Va., in the "Cove" on the farm where his great-grandson, George Ward, lived. David Ward became a conspicuous figure among the frontiersman, because of his intelligence and courage. He was known as one of the best Indian fighters on the Clinch, and was a member of Captain Russell's company that participated in the battle at Point Pleasant. When the Revolution began he was member of the militia company of which William Bowen was Captain; and went to King's Mountain with Rees Bowen, where he fought with Campbell's rifleman from the Holston and Clinch valleys. After Russell County was formed, David Ward was made a justice of the peace for that county. When the county of Tazewell was erected he became, by operation of statute law, a justice of the peace of this county; and he was the first presiding justice of the county court. His son, John, was made the first county clerk of Tazwell. David Ward was chosen, along with Thomas Witten, Jr., to represent the county in the House of Delegates at the Sessions of 1801-01, and 1802-03; and represented the county again at the 1809-10 and 1810-11.

Mary is Mary Clay Gregory, the younger sister of Daniel Parham Gregory.

I would say this is how Daniel and Mary Jane Daugherty met.

Mary Jane married Daniel Parham Gregory July 22, 1851.

And I would bet that living in Chas. H. Greever's house as probably a servant or helper to Eliza Greever, that Mary Jane named her next daughter after a woman who had been kind and a friend to her. Were they related? I don't know. Eliza Greever's maiden name was Harrison. In March of 1859, Daniel & Mary Jane Gregory's last child was born, a boy named Lewis H. Daniel's next brother was named Lewis Corder Gregory, I don't know who the H. was for.
Charles and Eliza are buried at the Greever Cemetery at Five Oaks in east Tazewell.
Eliza J., wife of Chas H. Greever, died Nov. 9, 1881, age 62 y & 7 D. I think that would make her born Nov. 2, 1819. So actually she was 31 (Lacking one month) in 1850. So a 31 year old married woman with three children, could have welcomed young 20yr old Mary Daugherty, and been a friend and mentor. As you know, it was very common in 18th and 19th centuries, for a young girl to leave her family and go live with another family, not necessarily as a servant but more as a mother's helper.

Mary Jane (Daugherty)and Daniel Gregory had five children before Daniel died at only 39 years old from Scrofula (tuberculosis of the lymphatic glands).

My 3rd great grandmother, Elizabeth Holland (Corder) Gregory, shared the birth day with her daughter-in-law, Mary Jane (Daugherty) Gregory. Elizabeth is also buried at the Daniel Gregory Cemetery located on Rt 61,Clear Fork, opposite Chestnut Grove Christian Church at Shawvers Mill, (According to SOME OLD CEMETERIES by Betty Hollowell) If anyone visits the cemetery, please take photos of all stones, especially looking for MJG footstone, and also a picture of Chestunt Grove Christian Church which continues there today. send to sherrykelly@comcast.net

Yet another interesting note:

Deed Book, no 12, p. 483 Daniel P. Gregary and Mary J. Gregary, his wife, to Christopher Shawver, Daniel Gregory and Adam Britts, Trustees. "For the purpose of having a meeting house built on the land conveyed, free for the use of all denominations professing the Christian religion when not occupied by the Christian Church." The lot is situate on Clear Fork and contains about one and a half acres. This church is now known as Chestnut Grove Church and is still used by the Christian Church of the neighborhood. (ANNALS of Tazewell County, Virginia by John Newton Harman, Sr.1922 )

Old Wives Tale or Science?

On the recent visit to Virginia during early May, Buck brought Mom some young tomato plants which she was anxious to put in the ground right away. However she hesitated because during a phone conversation with her childhood friend, Mom learned from Viola that she should not plant anything until after May 18th.

Now I grew up in the mountains and I know that the much anticipated spring is often late showing up in Bluefield. We always abided by the Farmers Almanac which declared planting could proceed only after May 10th. (I think that is about the same time they can wear white shoes. you know?) Apparently, according to Viola, it thundered on a certain day in February, so therefore, it would frost on May 18th. Snickering to myself, I thought this old timer must put too much faith in the old wives tales and folklore.

TODAY, May 18th, my mother called to say, IT FROSTED.

Day 12

Once the rain stopped and the clouds parted slightly, the trip to St. Paul was very nice. Cousin Bertie, whom I have never met, was a most wonderful host. She is very kind and you can tell right away that she loves family. I loved her smile when she spoke of my dad's visits to her house when he was working on the railroad. He and Uncle Robert stopped by to see her often when they were working runs to Norton. She remembers visiting at Aunt Mary Jane's (my Grandmother Buckland)when she was small. She has slowed a bit since her fall around Thanksgiving, but she was eager to identify some pictures that I brought from home and to share glimpes of other family pictures she had. Notice her in the picture below and then her father with the white beard and pipe. Isn't that a great shot! Charles Lewis Davidson was a brother to Mary Jane (Davidson) Buckland. Climbing the mountain (maybe the Clinch?) up out of St. Paul to Lebanon, we stopped briefly to visit Mom's Aunt Kathleen and her daughter Kathy. This was a real treat. AT 90, I think Kathleen could probably run circles around me with her enormous energy. She most willingly shared stories of her family (and my Grandmother's family Altha Davis Brooks) while Kathy drove us to Spring City. She showed us where her father, my great grandfather William Brooks, was buried, along with her mother Orpha Catherine (Jessee) Brooks. Unfortunately, there is no fence or markers, but the grassy location is exactly where Grandpa Brooks had requested, right on the nole above where his last white home still stands. She also tried to show us her birthplace up Long Hollow and Lost Valley Roads, but the weather and rough roads prohibited that. Maybe next visit, we can walk to the old Brooks homeplace.My middle-aged forgetfulness came into play once again when I totally forgot to take a picture with both Bertie, her daughter Barbara and son Bud and again with Aunt Kathleen and her daughter Kathy. Forgive me, we'll have to put that on our list for next time as well.

Day 13

I visited the Mercer County library searching Bluefield Daily Telegraph issues on microfilm (fisch). You folks who have never tried this, don't know how good we have it with the age of computers. I looked and looked but may need a few more clues before I return to that tedious task.This afternoon I hope to drop in on Bob Dishman, Audra Dishman's son, in search of a picture of her. She was also my grandmother's half sister, my great aunt, and Aunt Kathleen's sister. She is buried very near her last home in Grandview Memory Gardens. Maybe I'll get a photo to record her burial, as well.If time permits, I'll venture to Clearfork and Tazewell, in search of a couple more old family cemeteries. Then tomorrow, I'll head home. This has been a wonderful time with my mother and brothers, but THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. I'm home sick and ready for some Florida sunshine.

Day 8

Picked up two great books. One is a historical account of Tazewell County with sooooo much information about our pioneer 4th great grandfather David Ward. The details of the many heroic battles with Indians and the responsible manner in which he, along with others, were willing to take steps essential to forming a county government within one day’s horse ride from home. With bravery and brains, both men and women did whatever was required to forge ahead; courageous settlers made their way.A second book on the genealogy of the Harman’s will make clear some of the doubts I had in adding more ancestors in that line. I was introduced to the granddaughter of Henry Harman and took a likin' to her right away. What a jewel! She and I share a love for plundering and preserving the many neglected family cemeteries and spending time there. She reminded me not to wear good clothes to the cemeteries and explained her attire includes a cemetery hat and even a cemetery purse. One can be assured that I'll take these bits of advice to heart. After all, these sacred places where our ancestors rest are loaded with vital records. Thank you Mrs. Bettie Byrd!

Day 9

The phone rang opening up another connection to my Dad’s first cousin. I didn’t even ha
ve her in my data base, but quickly enough, we found ourselves bound together by the family ties. Her father and my grandmother were siblings. There must be a wealth of information between us. We will be corresponding and sharing photos for a long time to come. Cousin Carolyn was a delight to talk with and I look forward to meeting her on a future journey.

Day 10

Compton Cemetery – Falls Mills
Although I had specific directions in hand, there is no way I could have ever found this cemetery. I already had pictures of a few stones supplied by the generous Judy Llamas, there is nothing like a hands on experience in the middle of the woods. Brother Buck had been guided to the location on a previous trip with his wife Susie, so he took me directly to the somewhat fenced graveyard. We photographically recorded all interments as best we could, and with machete in hand, whacked down weeds covering the engravings. We even plucked a wild fern from the woods in hopes of it surviving my less than green thumb.

Dudley Cemetery – Falls Mills

No relatives in my lines are deposited in this lovely spot, but those there are blessed with a most gorgeous location. Blowing breezes, swaying trees and the calm waters of the Falls Mills Dam offer serenity beyond compare. The Dudley family is part of my sister-in-law’s line, so we also photographically recorded the monuments. Some as old as the Civil War.We also stopped for a quick chat with Uncle Robert. He is always glad to entertain family with his railroad stories. He reminds me of my dad in that way, and that puts a smile on my face. Buck and I came upon Uncle Robert as he sped across the road in his wheel chair. Who knew he could do wheelies and race around at speeds of up to 10 MPH. He looks good and appeared to be feeling well.In a short but painful stop by Grandview Memory Gardens, I captured Aunt Margaret's grave stone. It is surreal. I didn't expect to be there so soon. I really miss visiting with her.

Day 11

Happy Mother’s Day

Buck honored us with breakfast yesterday morning; Mom, Susie and I enjoyed our time with him and appreciated his thoughtfulness. What a great idea to celebrate on Saturday instead of fighting the crowds on Sunday. That leaves Sunday for church, crockpot comfort food and naps. What more could a Mother hope for.I had calls this morning from the girls and loved hearing their sweet voices. Mom and I headed for church where she has worshipped for many years. The actual church may be the oldest in the county and was built on land donated by the Wallace family a little more than 100 years ago.Tomorrow morning, we are off to St. Paul to visit a first cousin of my dad’s, Roberta “Bertie”. I look forward to hearing her memories and the beginning of another family relationship. In the afternoon, we’ll stop back in Lebanon to visit with another cousin and her mother, my great aunt Kathleen.Pray for good weather; Wading through these muddy hollers may give us a bit of a problem.Just kidding, the heavy rain is appreciated and just in time to start planting victory gardens. These hillsides are bright green with the rich soil plowed over, awaiting the seed.

Tazewell County Historical Society is a great resource for genealogical information and a great spot for reuniting with an old (I mean that ever so gingerly) high school classmate. I can say “old” since we are about the same age. I must say that time has been kind to Anthony and he looks fabulous. Besides that, he was most helpful in supplying information on my pioneer ancestor, David Ward. My 4th great grandfather settled the land known as THE COVE or Ward’s Cove. Mom and I took the day trip past Tazewell, down the Liberty Road, past Maiden Springs to the Cove. The area is absolutely beautiful, some of the most beautiful that I have ever seen, even on a rainy day.

Yearbooks from the 40’s – what a find! Brother Buck is always going to estate sales and auctions. At one auction, he purchased some local high school yearbooks. Before putting them away, he took a spin through the annuals to see if he recognized anyone from back in the day. And yes-sur-ee, he surely did!
A 1940 Beaver revealed Uncle Robert on the football team. Wow, who knew he went to Beaver when his brothers opted for the cross town rival.

The Class of 1942 at GHS uncovered many wonderful faces. Walter Buckland and Garland Thompson (freshmen). Nancy, Loraine and Hazel Wimmer (children of Robert (Uncle Bob) and Sallie Davidson Wimmer). Football heros Richard McHaffa and Charles Buckland graced the pages in the most hilarious uniforms. What a funny find!

Eureka!!!!!

At the Tazewell County Courthouse, I obtained the copy of a marriage record (1-22-1880)for Erastus Granger Davidson and Eliza Greever Gregory. According to Volume 3, Page 54, Line 9, Granger Davidson's parents were Samuel P. Davidson and Vicey Allen. This information proved invaluable to me. Although it is always a good find to have a marriage record for ancestors in my line, this is the only information that proves Vicey Allen was his mother, my 2nd great grandmother.

Family dinner at Mimi's house. In her perfectly "better than Paula Deen" style, Mom laid out a spread for the masses. About sixteen friends and relatives showed up at the appointed 12:30...or there about for a fabulous meal. That's how Mom's shows her love, and I must say, she loved us well.After Susie and I cleaned the dishes away and all the dessert was gone, we gathered outside to take some FAMILY shots on the steps before Christine, Briana and Peter Charles hit the road going home. I've always loved the picture at Grandaddy Buckland's house where the family gathered on the steps, so once again, my family accomodated me by posing there. Pictures with Mom and Buck and his family, pictures with Mom and Larry, Brian, Stephanie, Carson, Will and Brian Alexander. Even a picture of Mom playing croquet with Peter. Thank you Tina for taking such great pictures.

My brothers are so good to help me in my endeavors. Although I don't believe that cemetery jumping is a point of deep satisfaction to them, they give in to my interests and help me in the hunt. From directions given by Browne Hollowell, Larry found Mays Chapel Cemetery near the old Wittens Mill location along the banks of the Clinch River where the water falls gently over the large river rock creating a most peaceful and soothing sound. The calm is most appropriate for those loved ones placed lovingly in the fenced, but not well kept plot.

Stated in obituaries and death records, my great grandfather, Erastus Granger Davidson (1852-1924), his wife Eliza Greever (Gregory) (1857-1922) and their daughter Nannie Crockett McHaffa (1900-1928) are buried there. Unfortunately, there are no markers for them, and many other unmarked sunken graves.

Two Davidson's are there, but I must piece together more records to place them in our lineage. If anyone suspects they may have relatives there, please contact me at sherrykelly@comcast.net. I took photos and recorded all monuments there. I would love to share your family monuments with you.

May's Chapel Cemetery at Wittens Mill.

Take 19/460 east from Tazewell, turn left at Rt. 651, go 2/10ths mile to a small metal bridge on the right crossing the north fork of the Clinch River. There is only a bit of stone wall remaining from the actual Wittens Mill, just north of the bridge.

Cross the bridge to the right and continue on the little road there. Park. On foot, cross the N&W tracks at Marker N381. There is a wide metal gate. The cemetery is approximately a two acre plot with a barbed wire fence. Many graves have no markers, and some have fieldstones. May's Chapel Methodist Church was here before Willows Chapel was built further up towards Wrights Valley.

Success on the very first outing! Accompanied, actually led, by my big brother Buck, we discovered the DAVIDSON plot at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield, WV. The central figure of the interment, Joseph Davidson, a descendant of John Goolman Davidson, Irish immigrant and pioneer of this area. Another Joseph Davidson's home, son of John Goolman Davidson, is preserved at the city park and will open the festivities of an upcoming Bluefield Mountain Days Festival.

The grave marker is on the left, (only about 2.5 miles from I77). For so many years on my way down Laurel Creek to the BLE Engineer's picnic at Sandy Ball's, I must have passed right by the burial of my 5th great grandfather. I had no idea.

With the help of an audio book, THE SHACK, I made the 700 mile trip in one day. I highly recommend putting a CD of some great book into the player. The day slipped away until I reached the tunnels. Both Big Walker Mountain and East River Mountain have tunnels that make the once painfully dreaded distance from Wytheville to Bluefield a breeze.

An exit sign immediately following the opening of the tunnel leads up the exit ramp to John forbes Nash, Jr. Highway, named for the Nobel Prize Laureate and economic genius from Bluefield.

Goin' Home

Growing up in the mountains of southwest Virginia, I was forced by my daddy to listen to country music. Well, I suppose he didn’t force me. I could ‘a gone outside to play, but when he was home, I ‘spect I hung out with him a lot. He was gone so much workin’ on the railroad, and when he wasn’t gone workin’ on the railroad, he was gone drinkin’. But when he was around, he listened to country music on the only television station that we could pick up, way out there on 460. Now his music was not like what you see on the Country Music Award Show today. Daddy’s favorite was pure heart-breakin’ back woods mountain music. He would watch the Porter Wagoner Show when Porter had all the bling of a modern day rapper. Standing on the Grand Ole Opry stage, Porter showed off his glitterery wagon-wheel covered jacket and sang along side the big-haired blonde, Dolly Pardon. They sang that ole “cryin’ in yer beer” type music until it would make my tender ears bleed in agony. Whispering Bill Anderson, Little Jimmy Dickens, and the local guy, Cecil Surrett were talented men to my daddy. There was even a band of young fellows that my brother sarcastically referred to as SALVATION. I think that was because they always sang that salvation song and whined the notes right through their nose. My daddy loved those twangy songs.

With all that said, you understand that I have very little use for my dad’s country music. Strangely enough, when I hear those familiar instruments of mountain music, I long to go back. Back to Virginia. Back to a time when I didn’t know anything but that. I am transported to places where people put a smile on my face and warm fuzzies in my heart. I am drawn to the mountains where I was born and raised. Mom always said that I ‘got above my raisin’ and maybe I did in some ways. But I am always proud of where I came from. That is what makes me who I am.

In my continued search for family history, I’m starting another journey tomorrow, back to the mountains. Excitement is building as I anticipate visiting Mom, driving around those winding creek bed roads and meeting more cousins that I never knew before. As we chat about our ancestors and visit even more cemeteries, I feel a closer bond to my parents and grandparents and even the valley underneath East River Mountain where I was born.

I’ll try to post along the way, so watch for more pictures, adventures and family ties, and pray that I find some snake boots somewhere to protect myself from those slithering rattlesnakes as they lay sunnin'. Hopefully they won’t mind if I interrupt their solitude, just for a moment.

In May 1863, he got a receipt for clothing while he was in 1st Division Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia. Height 5'8" Age 23 Complexion Fair; Eyes Hazel; Hair dark. On September 27, 1864, he got a receipt for clothing while he was in General Hospital, Montgomery Springs, Virginia. He was given a Parole of Honor, June 22, 1865, Charleston, W.Va. for Confederate veterans wounded in battle.

A Teapot for a Tea Party

Tea anyone?

April 15th seems a most appropriate day to share a beautiful Cartwright Bros. treasure. The antique blue and white teapot with it's crazed finish reflects the years of use by Eliza Greever (Gregory) Davidson, my great grandmother 1857-1922. She grew up in Clear Fork, Tazewell County, VA and married Erastus Granger Davidson. I just imagine that she made tea for her family and guests, serving it in this very piece. These things take me back to a time I never knew; does that make sense?
Remember your history class and the famed Boston Tea Party?

On December 16th, 1773 American colonists dumped tea into the Boston Harbor to protest an oppressive tax. This act was one of those leading up to the American Revolution in which many of our ancestors fought.

The theme of the tea party today, is “Rally Against Generational Debt”; we are calling for tax reform on all levels of government, and we will especially be protesting locally the stimulus and bailouts at the federal level. Protecting the financial future is the least we can do for future generations?

A baby Gregory was born and died in the arms of parents George William and Roxie Hazel (Stowers) Gregory in Bluefield, WV and buried in Bland County, VA. The poem is from a scrapbook belonging to my grandmother, Mary Jane (Davidson) Buckland. Maybe these words brought comfort to her as her cousin Wm lost his child. You see, she remembered losing her own infant twin daughters some nineteen years earlier. Infant death was so common prior to the 21st century. I suppose that the words of THE LITTLE GRAVE only scratch the surface of the pain they were forced to endured.

You need not dig it very wide,

Nor dig it very deep,

The little grave in which to hide

My baby - gone to sleep.

But dig it where the sun will shine

Upon it all the day,

And birds and blossoms all combine

To drive the gloom away.

Choose some fairspot, where in the spring

The grass will soonest grow;

Below is part of the obituary for Minnie. An old discolored clipping was discovered in the scrapbook kept by Mary Jane (Davidson) Buckland. Such treasured memories are wonderful resources filling in gaps for dates, names, cemeteries, etc. Sometimes the glued and tattered papers are our only recorded proof.

Hopefully, in a few weeks, I will visit the cemetery in Clearfork where Minnie is buried. The Daniel Gregory Cemetery was visited and copied April 21, 1975 by Betty Hollowell, accompanied by Claire Fox, as told in the book Some Old Cemeteries in Tazewell County. According to the book, the cemetery is "located on Rt. 61, Clear Fork, opposite Chestnut Grove Christian Church at Shawvers Mill. There were some unmarked graves".

It has rained catz and dogz this week in Florida. Now I know we needed the water desperately, so I have tried to remain patient; but it is ever so difficult when dark clouds and gloomy days never seem to let go. Sophie and I sit in the office; I in my chair and Sophie at her post by the window. Ever diligent at her duties to watch for squirrels, our spoiled-rotten dog stays right by my side while I dig for more ancestors. And dig I do. When I start burrowing in my messy nest and the computer captures my days, I am transported to another time. Discovering relatives who served in the Civil or Revolutionary Wars, I try to imagine how their life must have been, living among fierce Indians and fighting for their lives and those of their chidren.

Nevertheless, reality slips back in as the sun shines brightly on the pond, and I am certain of how truly blessed I am. The Sunshine State legitimizes it's name by giving me a view that is nothing short of spectacular. The trees, the water, the Canadian geese, wood ducks, red headed woodpeckers, squirrels, foxes, even coyote....all here for me to enjoy.

This is my day, filled with wonder and adventure, right from the vantage point of my computer. Thank you Lord, I am indeed grateful for the blessings and ...the sunshining once again.

The Story Tellers

We are the chosen. My feelings are, in each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all those who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do.

In finding them, we somehow find ourselves.
How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, you have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say.

It goes beyond documenting facts. It goes to whom I am and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it.

It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us, that we might be born who we are, that we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are they and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell a story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers.

That is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. (Author Unknown but shared by a relative and fellow family history lover).

Nancy "Nannie" Ward Gregory

My great grandaunt was one six children born to Daniel Parham and Mary Jane (Daugherty) Gregory. Nannie was named for her grandmother Nancy Ward, daughter of the pioneer David Ward.

Taken from Pendleton's History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia, Copyright 1920, page 528, this picture shows some of the implements the pioneer women used for manufacturing fabrics to make clothing for their families. The woman standing by the loom is Miss Nannie Gregory, one of the very few expert weavers now left in the county. She is wearing the poke bonnet her grandmother wore many years ago. The loom, which was her grandmother's is a hundred years old, as are also the spinning wheels and reel seen in the picture.

From Pendleton's History of Tazwell, p. 411. "Abstracts of Tazewell County Will Book # 1, page 221," records David Ward's will, made May 12, 1821 and Proven June 1827. Wife , Eleanor, one-third of the plantation where I now live containing by estimation 400 acres, At the death of wife the 400 acres to go to equally to Isaac Ward, Hiram Ward and Addison Ward. To son, Rees Ward 100 acres. Balance of personal estate to be divided among my four daughters, Jane Ward, Nancy Ward, Phebe Ward and Matilda Ward. David Ward, John Ward, Robert Ward, Wm. Ward and Joseph Ward signed a petition to form Tazewell Co. VA in 1793. Again in 1795 a petition to form Tazewell Co. VA., signed by William Ward, James Davis, George Davis, Wm. Davis, John Davis Jr., Zachariah Davis, Abram Davis, John Davis, John Davis Sr., Wm. Ward, David Ward, John Ward and Joseph Ward. Then in 1796 a petition of Wythe Co., to form a new County, Tazewell Co., David Ward, John Ward, Joseph Ward, Saul Ward, Wm. Ward, John Davis, A. Davis, Wm. Davis and Zachariah Davis.

Originally from Scotland, the Wards went to Ireland under England's plantation act after lands and titles were confiscated. Thus becoming the Scotch-Irish of the new world. It all started with James Ward born 1672 in Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal, Ireland and died 1759 in Greenville, Augusta County, VA. He married Sarah Rodgers before 1700 in Ireland. Their immigration was c 1730, from Ireland to Philadelphia, PA, Augusta Co., VA. Three sons, James Ward Jr.; William Ward; and John Ward all born in Ireland and came with their parents to the new world. We descend from William Ward.

The Scotch-Irish began to arrive in America in 1640 and continued to come in small numbers. By 1700 adverse economical conditions and political and religious conflict arose. The English landlords demanded higher rentals and Parliament regulations restricted the cattle and sheep raising industry. In 1704, Parliament excluded Presbyterians from holding civil and military offices, and taxed them to support the Anglican Church in which they refused to worship. All this caused thousands of them with their Scotch heritage, their Presbyterian faith, and their experience in colonization of Northern Ireland, to leave for the American Colonies. When the English landlords in Ireland in 1717, upon the expiration of leases, raised the rentals a steady stream of the Scotch-Irish began to pour into America, with 10,000 arriving in Pennsylvania within a year. It was with these Scotch-Irish at this time that our Ward forebears came to this country.

James and Sarah Ward with their five children emigrated from Ireland to the American Colonies, landing at Philadelphia PA in about 1730, according to family tradition. The Wards remained in Philadelphia until the Governor of Virginia encouraged the opening of southwest Virginia to settlement. The Governor offered inducement to attract new people as a buffer between established settlements and the Indians.

The streams of emigration that poured over the mountains were people whose wealth consisted of strong arms and stout hearts. They had been followers of Cromwell during the English Civil War. Many of the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from PA and Maryland made their way through the Shenandoah Valley to Augusta County, populated primarily by those belonging to the Episcopal (Anglican) Church of England. Religious conflicts arose between the two groups, but by 1800 most animosity had subsided.

In 1758 James made a petition to the local government for support because he was almost blind and unable to provide for himself, according to the "Chronicles of The Scotch-Irish Settlement of VA" Volume 2, page 232.

John Letcher was born in the town of Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He attended private rural schools and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. In 1833, he was graduated from Washington Academy in Lexington. He studied law was admitted to the Virginia State Bar and opened a practice in Lexington in 1839.

Letcher was editor of the (Shenandoah) Valley Star newspaper from 1840 to 1850. He was active in the presidential campaigns of 1840, 1844, and 1848, serving as Democratic elector in 1848. Although never a true abolitionist, he signed the Ruffner Pamphlet of 1847, which proposed the abolition of slavery in that part of Virginia west of the Blue Ridge Mountains; however, he soon repudiated this antislavery stand. He was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1850.

He was elected as a Democratic candidate and served as a Representative in the United States Congress from 1851-1859. In Congress, he was known as "Honest John" because of his opposition to government extravagance.

John Letcher was elected as Governor of Virginia in 1859, defeating Whig candidate William L. Goggin, and served from 1860-1864. Letcher was prominent in the organization of the peace convention that met in Washington, D.C., February 8, 1861, in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending American Civil War. He discouraged secession, but was active in sustaining the ordinance passed by Virginia on April 17, 1861. In 1864, his home in Lexington was burned by Union troops during General David Hunter's raid.

It is with great sadness that I make this post today. Having visited with dear sweet Aunt Margaret this past August, I had no inkling, and no one but God knew, that today we would be experiencing such loss. For all my years, I remember her with respect and admiration; as a wonderful, caring wife who served and loved her husband.

Bearing a very proper but not stuffy look, Aunt Margaret had every white hair in place, and modest makeup just so; always wore a fine dress; always smiled and hugged me; always asked about my family.

One fall afternoon a few years back, I arrived at the old homeplace for an unannounced visit. There I found Aunt Margaret, her sister Justine and Uncle Robert standing outside making apple butter in a large copper kettle over an open flame. Yes, she had on a dress and looked just as pretty as if she was going to church on Easter morning. Her hospitality so genuine and warm; I left there that day with a jar of homemade apple butter to savor the memory of a cherished lady.

I'm very fond of all my family, but as we gather during these times of grief, I am especially thankful for those who have been a significant part of my life. I will miss her dearly. Nevertheless, let's not grieve for her because of the hope we have in Christ (Thessalonians). Let's celebrate her life and the joy she now knows in the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ, the one true Almighty God.

Margaret Alois Buckland, 88, of 14685 Mudfork Road, Falls Mills, VA, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at her home. She was born in Yards, Va. and was a daughter of the late Grover C. Wallace and Ora Caldwell Wallace.She was a member of the Memorial Church of Christ in Princeton, and in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil Wallace, Bernard Wallace, Garnett Wallace, Garland Wallace, Billy Wallace, and an infant brother; and by a sister, Betty Matter. Mrs. Buckland is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert Cecil Buckland; son, Robert Cecil Buckland, Jr. and wife Linda, Moneta, Va.; daughter, Janice Wellman and husband James, Falls Mills, Va.; grandchildren, Jimmy Wellman, Morristown, Tenn., Jena Wellman, Johnson City, Tenn., David Buckland, Stanfield, N.C., and Michelle Hartman and Kermit Johnson, Moneta, Va.; great-grandchildren, Brittany Wellman, Isaac Wellman, Chara Ringle, Nicholas Ringle and Andrew Bader; and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by one sister, Justine Thompson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. with Frank Watkins, Dr. Rick Bradley, and Rick Mathena officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The Buckland family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clinton Looney Missionary to Mexico c/o Mary Cook, P.O. Box 250, Vansant, VA 24656 or to Christian Acres, 1351 Evangelism Road, Bluefield, WV 24701. Dudley Memorial Mortuary of Bluefield, VA is serving the Buckland family.

My great granduncle Franklin Clemons Gregory was one of fifteen children born to John Keatts and Elizabeth Hollard (Corder) Gregory in Pittsylvania County, VA. He and his wife, Shelma Statira V. Shawver are buried near Shawvers Mill in Clearfork, Tazewell County, VA. See previous month posts for siblings.

The picture is of an area very close to Clearfork called Burkes Garden. Imagine how beautiful and undeveloped this land was at the turn of the century when Franklin and Statira were raising their twelve children. (see March 1, post for children)
